Each month the Foundation will select two artists about whom more should be known: an historical artist that demonstrates the traditional philosophy and techniques and should be appreciated and a contemporary artist that demonstrates both talent and potential who should be promoted and supported
December 2008 - Historical ArtistCarol FitzSimondsBorn and raised in Virginia, Carol married a career military officer in 1974. Moving so often she was termed “a traveling printmaker” by one newspaper, Carol and her etching press have logged major mileage with 16 military moves. Settled now in Portsmouth, Rhode Island with her husband, she is enjoying creating art in her home studio overlooking the Sakonnet River, teaching advanced printmaking at the Providence Art Club, and being curator of Gallery 297 in Bristol, Rhode Island and Congress Street Gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. December 2008 - Historical ArtistJoseph PennelJoseph Pennell, painter, illustrator, etcher, lecturer, critic, author, teacher, was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Philadelphia Quaker parents and briefly attended the School of Industrial Design now called the Philadelphia College of Art. He was a pupil in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts between 1878-80, and his unusual ability in etching was early recognized by his instructor, James L.
