Albert Sterner was born in London, England of American parents and throughout his life frequented between the U.S and Europe. In his early years he demonstrated exceptional drawing skills which landed him a scholarship to study at the Birmingham Art Institute. He began his career working many different jobs in the illustration field. In 1886 he traveled to Paris, France and further built upon his skills at the Academic Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Following this experience he went back into the illustration field and contributed drawings to publications such as Century, Harper's, and Scribner's in addition to illustrating some books. In his late thirties Sterner extended his artistic boundaries beyond illustration and began to create works in oil and watercolor. He finally settled in New York City where he died at age 83.
