About:
Ann Chernow creates her works based on individual impressions that follow the likeness of movies from the 1930s and 1940s. These images often reference actual films, publicity material, magazines or other memorabilia from the time period. The same characters and settings are used but more modern faces are created while the spirit of the reference is maintained. This technique of mixing past with present is used to create a sense of nostalgia which doesn't trigger an association with a particular film star. Chernow believes that once seen a movie is never completely forgotten. She says, "Memories from films can be channels, metaphor, and private reverie through which an artist can address the human condition."
